NorCal CrossFit Jan. 21st 2014
Schedule Notice for tomorrow
Tomorrow a lot of our coaches will be in Sonoma running a team building workshop for HGST. We are really proud to be part of this and we have some great things planned for them. We still have coaches on the ground back here, but we will need to cancel a few classes at San Jose to account for some missing coaches.
The 5pm and 6pm will be cancelled at San Jose. Sorry for any inconvenience.
CLIENT RECOGNITION - SANTA CLARA
Christina is an extremely driven member. She has a silent determination to become stronger, faster, and more proficient in her movements, challenging herself every morning and going RX in a workout whenever she can, no matter what it takes. She has been diligent with her diet and consistency in the gym which has paid off tremendously. She continues to progress every day I see her and has great potential for more!
1. When did you join Norcal CrossFit?
I started in Jan 2013
2. Why did you join CrossFit?
I joined because I was overweight and unhappy. I had 2 pregnancies in a short amount of time, gained a bunch of weight and lost a lot of sleep. My husband was working nights, 10+ hour shifts and a lot of overtime. I wasn't getting enough sleep and would eat for energy, but I was too tired to cook so I would eat bad/easy stuff, thus I ended up gaining way more weight then I was comfortable with. Then, last November my little sister came over for Thanksgiving; she looked amazing and fit! I wanted to look amazing and fit, too! She told me she had started CrossFit. I talked to my husband about joining, completed 'onramp' and my first WOD was the "Filthy 50". My sister kept apologizing during the workout, she kept telling me, "I'm so sorry, not all workouts are this long or tough, please don't quit." haha
3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Crossfit has improved my mental 'muscle' the most. I'm so tougher mentally now, I think that was an unexpected side effect for me. I've lost 7 inches from my waist, lost body fat and now have muscle development. I'm the strongest I've ever been in my life and I'm really proud of all the hard work I've been putting in. My confidence has gone up. Previous to coming to the gym I would duck out of my family photos, now I'm happy to be in them :)
4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Make a commitment to yourself, like to go "X" days a week, then a goal, and to keep moving during the workouts even if you can't do the movement, there is always a scaled movement. Scaled movements are building blocks for you! What worked for me was to be consistent, show up everyday I can (which means coming in at 6 am while the family is still asleep), introduce yourself & make friends. Whatever your goal is, you are going to need a lot of hard work and dedication.
I also want to say, If you fell off the wagon and have stopped coming in, come back, I miss you.
5. Favourite CrossFit exercise?
Chipper workouts...and whenever Cheryl is coaching :)
6. Favourite activity outside of CrossFit?
Soccer, and watching the Niners win (or lose)
7. Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
First it was running without taking a break during WOD, then it was kipping pull ups, recently it was Rx'ing Fran...sometimes its even writing my name on the PR board....I also broke a bone in my arm, even though it was a set back, I didn't get upset or stop me from coming back after I got the ok from my Dr to return back to weightlifting.
8. Favourite place to eat a paleo-ish meal?
Home. Paleo is pretty restrictive. Right now we (the friends I've made at the gym) are doing the fuel challenge....I've found a lot of good recipes on PaleOMG.com, Practical Paleo by Diane Sanfilippo was a nice intro cookbook for the paleo diet. I also find myself on Pintrest looking up paleo meals.
9. Something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I grew up with severe asthma and was allergic to milk. I spent a lot of time in the hospital as a kid.
10. What/who inspires you the most?
100% my kids, when I'm losing focus during a workout I tend to think of them to motivate me. I'll picture their little faces as newborns and I'll think what's 15 to 45 minutes of running around compared to what I already did with them.
Also the coaches, I follow a few of the coaches on Instagram and seeing their posts are inspiring.
