Coach Laura tells her story.....
With the New Year upon us, I took some time to reflect on how my life has changed over the past 4 years since finding CrossFit. The picture on the right is me back in 2008. I am 20 pounds lighter and obviously pretty scary skinny. I was so constantly broken and sick that I could hardly hold a spot on my college cross-country team, and I was very frequently cranky, tired, and emotional for no apparent reason. I wasn’t eating meat (or nearly enough calories period) because I thought that is what would make me “healthy” and a faster runner. My body was breaking down; I was anemic, weak, losing bone density rapidly, had amenorrhea, and my cholesterol was actually way higher than it is now. I was on a path to somewhere I don’t like to think about.
Looking back, I can honestly say that CrossFit has saved my life. It goes beyond just putting on weight and having a better understanding of what it means to be fit and healthy. It was a whole mindset change and a gained and sense of empowerment. My identity at the time was in being an endurance athlete, and I got so wrapped up in it that I lost a sense of so many of the pleasures in life. Meeting Rusty, starting CrossFit, and surrounding myself with the most amazing and positive community on the planet has made all the difference in the world. I now realize that I can do and be anything I put my mind to. While I was always driven, the changes in my mental state thanks to the clarity that the CrossFit lifestyle brought, gave me perspective and the empowerment to take risks and move forward with a new take on life – with determination and some muscle power, we can seriously do anything we put our minds to.
Since starting CrossFit and gaining a whole new education in fitness and health, I have put on 20 pounds, lowered my cholesterol by 20 points, cut my triglycerides in half, increased my bone density by a ton, put on muscle mass, reduced my OCD, taken risks and got my absolute dream job, and most importantly found true joy in life. I am sharing this not because I want you to read my story and think about me; rather, my hope is that you read this and think about someone LIKE me – someone you know who could benefit from a change of perspective and a new take on health and fitness, whether it be losing weight, gaining weight, or just getting healthy inside and/or out. We so often set personal resolutions for the New Year to change ourselves – give up some junk food, lose a couple pounds, stop buying lulu lemon (I’m so guilty on that one) – but maybe this year we could all think of someone we love who could use guidance, support, or a small nudge in the right direction. As CrossFitters we all have a new education on health, fitness, and community. My goal this year is going to be to reach out to at least one person a month in 2014 to try to impact a life through CrossFit. Imagine the impact we could have as a community. It doesn’t have to mean getting someone into a gym right away or forcing CrossFit on them; it could just be a baby step of asking them to do a park WOD with you or having them over for a healthy dinner.
I am so thankful to be able to call you guys my NorCal family, and whether you know it or not, you keep me going every day and give me something to continue to better myself for.
Happy 2014 everyone!
