NorCal CrossFit Dec. 18th 2013
ATHLETE RECOGNITION - MOUNTAIN VIEW
One of my greatest memories of Mary is way back in the on ramp when we had to do box jumps in a work out. She was so afraid of jumping up to a box we set up a couple plates so she can still jump and get through the work out. It took a while but now she's easily cruising through work outs jumping up to a 24 in. box. She swore she would never be able to jump up to a box or do pull ups and just recently she completed the "Lumberjack 20" doing all pull ups with out a band. Mary comes in everyday and works her but off. Thanks for being apart of the NorCal community!
1. When did you join CrossFit NorCal (MV)?
I joined Norcal in Oct 2012
2. Why did you join CrossFit?
About 3 years ago I started running and really trained hard for several half marathons which eventually led to knee pain. My husband convinced me I needed to add some strength training to my endurance program and suggested Crossfit. So I just walked into NorCal one day and decided to check it out. The awesome coaches and challenging environment is what kept me coming back!
3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
EVERYTHING! I could barely do a push up before I started Crossfit and now I am significantly stronger than where I was a year ago. I also changed my eating and sleeping habits as I realized this has a big impact on how I felt. Some recent big wins, are kipping pull ups and handstand push ups :)
4. What advice would you give to someone with regards to starting CrossFit?
Three things I always try to always keep in mind.
Don't be intimated: I remember my first couple of days being incredibly intimated, everyone knew what to do and I had no clue what the equipment was let alone how to lift it. But as a newbie I realized our crossfit community is very encouraging.
Don't give up- EVER: My first few weeks I felt like someone beat the crap outta me everyday, but its so important to keep going back it eventually gets better. That being said, If your not getting something one day and getting super frustrated - its okay to take a break , walk it out and try again. You may even just need to try again tomorrow.
Be confident: I still struggle with this one especially on certain lifts but constantly remind my self half of this is a mental challenge.
5. Favorite CrossFit exercise?
Probably a tie between (back/front) Squatssss and GHD's
6. Favorite activity outside of CrossFit?
I love traveling and experiencing new places.
7. Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
You know that feeling you get when you pushed yourself the entire workout because you stuck with a weight or a movement that was incredibly difficult? Yea, every time I do that- I walk away feeling proud.8. Favorite place to eat a paleo-ish meal?
I don't eat out often but if I do i usually pick any place with a fresh salad bar - nothing beats an amazing salad.
9. Something that people would be surprised to know about you?
I spoke 3 languages fluently as a kid; Arabic with my family, English at school, and Greek at after school. No one from my family or friends spoke Greek, but my parents sent me to a Greek after school program until I was 8. Unfortunately, I don't remember any Greek today.
10. What/who inspires you the most?
I am blessed with so many inspiring people around me. But if I had to choose one, My husband is probably the most motivating and inspiring person I know. I am so proud of the person he is and respect him so much for dedicating the past 11 years to serving our country. His experiences in the last 11 years have motivated me to be the best version of me. I am grateful to have such a supportive and intelligent man by my side.
