December 15th NorCal hosted its first Olympic weightlifting event and it was a great success. First off thank you to Coach Ian for pulling all this together and to all the sponsors and volunteers who helped. We had 7 girls and about 20 guys lifting which was a pretty good turn out for our first one. Let's get more next time!! For me it was my first Olympic meet and I was really looking forward to it. It is nothing like I ever imagined being on that platform. You can lift as much as you want and PR all the time with your crew music blasting etc. but when you get on that platform everything changes. I didn't know what to expect but it was definitely worth the ride.

We asked Nate a few questions about the comp.

Was this your first Oly Comp?

Yes but definitely not the last!

Did you make all your lifts?

Negative. Went 4 for 6. 

Was it as nerve racking as it appears?

Yes being my first oly meet I didn't know what to expect. It is completely different than any CrossFit event in that it's just you and the bar and all eyes on you. It's completely silent so you don't have Katy Perry there to sing to you. Every lift has to be perfect or else it doesn't count (no press outs). You definitely have to be on your game when approaching the bar. It was cool.

Are you going to do another one?


Oly lifting or CrossFit? Or both?

I think both for sure for me, I like the nerves from a CrossFit comp. If you want to be competitive in the CrossFit world you have to be a strong oly lifter but it doesn't have to be you strongest piece because you can still rely on your endurance, gymnastics, or mental capacity skills to get you through a work out. Doing CrossFit events/wods can help prepare you mentally for oly lifts or meets. Now if you want to excel in oly lifting alone I think that has to be your main focus. Look at Liu Xiao Jun or any olympic weightlifter, all they do is lift. Very rarely will you get a Bo Jackson type who is excellent at both.
