Dead Bugs or Hollow Rocks!?

The push up…

today you will be doing A LOT of them. Though this movement seems relatively simple, the reality is that so many of us (especially once fatigued) just don’t do them correctly, which over an extended period of time means less positive adaptation and possibly even injury.

 In this video, Carl Paoli goes through a progression to help us understand the proper mechanics of the push up. He talks about the three things he thinks about when addressing any movement. It can be helpful for us as athletes to think about these three concepts as we address any movement, and today, that movement will be the push up.

Position – From start to finish, position of the push up is crucial. We want to maintain that hollow body.

Movement – If we set up correctly, we are setting ourselves up for a successful movement, but it is also crucial to think about position throughout the entire movement down and up, never letting go of the tension and torque created through the shoulder and the rest of the body.

Purpose – Make the work you do relevant! Do it right now to make sure that it is helping to make everything else you do in the gym and in life better. Strive to make even these seemingly simple bodyweight movements awesome, and you will see it pay off in the more complex.
