NorCal CrossFit April. 15th 2014

The Endurance Club warming up this evening before hitting their track session.

Sometimes you have to look a little deeper....

It’s truly amazing to see how CrossFit takes the average person and bestows upon them a whole new understanding of how the body works. I spent my entire “athletic” life prior to my CrossFit years thinking I knew a thing or two about my body and the way it works, always attributing constant injury to simply overtraining or running the same direction on the track for too many laps.

What I have come to realize through my experience with CrossFit (both as an athlete and coach) is that by using our bodies the way they are intended to be used (through performing functional movements), we can come to discover a whole new understanding and appreciation for the way our muscles, skeletal system, and mind work together for everything we do – from sitting at our desks at work to performing a one rep max back squat.

Position, posture, mobility… each is essential to our performance in the gym, but also to our quality of life outside the gym. Before starting CrossFit, learning and performing functional movements, and having the chance to learn from my colleagues and the athletes I train, I had no idea that something like a seriously off bite, could actually be causing pain in my knee. It seems absurd, but it’s true. Our body is so interconnected that some tweak, curve, or postural problem in a seemingly unrelated area can actually cause chronic pain, numbness, stiffness, etc. somewhere else.

CrossFit has given me perspective on the interconnectedness of the body, the importance of position and posture (even outside the gym), and the significance of mind-body connection. Understanding movement is the first step towards improving every aspect of our performance in the gym.

I recently discovered that my bite and jaw are very off. After 2 years of back pain and a trip to see Kelly Starrett of San Francisco CrossFit, I learned of Dr. Uckert out in Austin, TX, a dentist who works with athletes by creating mouth guards to help with jaw and bite issues. After making me a mold and putting me through some “tests”, I quickly discovered that my jaw was indeed playing a major role in my back pain and my position issues.

The guard finally came in the mail 2 weeks later, and I can already feel a difference. Positions feel better. Pushups, dips, and strict pull ups feel stronger, and my neck doesn’t feel nearly as stiff. This is all a product of aligning my jaw, which allows the rest of my body to function how it should. Now, I am still definitely a work in progress, as we all are, and it’s not an immediate magic fix, but this is a testament to the true interrelatedness of the body.

Dr. Uckert will be visiting us a NorCal CrossFit on April 26th to take appointments for CrossFitters. Take a look at this flier for more information, and feel free to email me or catch me at the gym if you have questions!
