San Jose Athlete Recognition!Derek Fons and Katie Barbour
1. When did you join CrossFit NorCal?
Katie: Mid November 2013
Derek: Mid-August 2013, so coming up on 7 months.
2. Why did you join CrossFit?
Katie: Derek made me!! All jokes aside, I have always looked to challenge myself in all aspects of my life. After hearing Derek speak so passionately patiently about CrossFit, I knew I had to try it out. I have been hooked since my first on ramp class.
Derek: To be more social and active. I met this really awesome guy named Steven who works at Barefoot coffee and he told me all about CrossFit and NorCal, told me to check it out. I just took a leap and signed up for the on-ramp. I've been having fun ever since and it's the first time since being a kid and riding BMX where physical activity doesn't feel like a chore, so I'm super excited about that.
3. What changes in your health, physique and overall performance have you seen since starting CrossFit?
Katie: I am definetely a lot stronger, and have noticed sustained energy through out the day. Also CrossFit has made me a happier person. Its one of the few places I can escape life's daily stresses and focus on having fun and working out.
Derek: I have lost 20lbs since starting which is neat. I can now run a few miles easily and climb a rope, things I never done in my life before CrossFit. I don't pay much attention to my physique but I have noticed my body has gotten a less squishy. ;)
4. What advice would you give to someone with regard to starting CrossFit?
Katie: Be competitive! How ever the competition should be with yourself, and not others. Also the greatest barrier to success is the fear of failure. So don't be afraid to lift heavier! If you fail you can always go back and try again. But if you don't challenge yourself, you will never succeed.
Derek: Commit to it. Push through the suck and stay positive.
5. Favorite CrossFit exercise?
Katie: I know this is going to sound crazy, but I love Burpees!
6. Favorite activity outside of CrossFit?
Katie: I like to swing dance, and run.
Derek: Using computers to make cool things. (Programming) Also riding bikes.
7. Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit?
Katie: Being able to do some double under backwards, only to find out that I should be doing them forward.
Derek: Doing 14.1. I did not do good at all, but it was a really fun time and I felt really supported by everyone around me. Very similar to everyday at Crossfit, but that day everyone was going off and giving it their best. Just was really proud and happy to be a part of something like that.
8. Favorite place to eat a paleo-ish meal?
Katie: Dose our Kitchen count? I love to prepare food, and share it with others. Which means any one is welcomed to come over for a meal!
Derek: Working at Apple makes Paleo easy. Cafe Macs has a Paleo station everyday for lunch and it is always amazing. Second choice, Freebirds.
9. Something that people would be surprised to know about you?
Katie: I used to mascot for the city of the San Luis Obispo, and I am a huge coffee nerd.
Derek: I have been straight edge/drug free since age 17.
10. What/who inspires you the most?
Katie: Two things inspire me. First is everyone I meet in Crossfit. Everyone is so different but yet we all meet together work hard and cheer each other on. Its very inspiring to be part of a community that cheers as loud for a newbie as they will for an rockstar. Secondly is Derek. I know it sounds cheesy but Derek has inspired me a lot. Seeing Derek grow as an athlete makes me proud and inspires me to do my best.
Derek: People with passion for their work and that work hard at it. My lady friend is also a great source of motivation and inspiration as well.
