It's the Sugar....

There always seems to be a new “fad-diet” people follow, depending on the trends of the year, month, or even week. We have seen juice cleanses, soup-only diets, low-fat, high carb, Atkins.... basically you name it, we have seen it. I am not here to dispel any of these diets because people have the right to try whatever they want and to decide whether it works for them. What I am here to talk about, though, is one diet school of thought, that is here to stay and that people should finally start paying attention to because the research is in, and the proof has backing.

This goes beyond a “fad-diet” and becomes a matter of life and death… pretty heavy stuff, huh? Well, bare with me because this one small change in your life could make all the difference… it could mean increased performance in the gym, better overall sense of wellbeing, more constant energy levels, or even a longer life.

This increasingly discussed diet concept involves many people’s favorite food group: SUGAR! Especially fructose and the refined sugars found in soda, candy, ice cream, etc. (you get the picture). The reality is that sugar is more than just a cheat day favorite; it can lead to addiction, obesity, heart disease, and diabetes, among other scary maladies that have become an epidemic in this country.

Take 3 minutes to watch this video on sugar’s devastating impact. I promise it won’t get too sciency or boring for you.

 For years, the culprit for obesity and heart disease has been fat, but what researchers (and so many CrossFitters) are starting to discover is that fat is not the enemy, sugar is, and by controlling the amount of sugar in our diets, we can control our health, weight, blood sugar, sleep patterns, and performance.

 While I know many of you already understand this, and practice the CrossFit prescription of meat, vegetables, nuts/seed, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar, it is always good to have our memories refreshed as to why we eat the way we do. If you know someone struggling with the concept, this might be a good video to share. After all, we want to spread the health, wellness, and fitness we have found through CrossFit to others we love most.

This doesn’t mean you can never enjoy a “cheat day,” but just think twice before overindulging, and remember the impact sugar can have.
