What is Fitness?
Have you ever considered this question? We talk about being fit pretty much every day in the gym, but we rarely take time to think about how to define what this means. Coach Glassman, CrossFit’s founder, came up with a definition that simplifies fitness into 100 words.
"World-Class Fitness in 100 Words: Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports."
As a member of NorCal CrossFit, you've already taken a huge step towards achieving true fitness. You come in consistently, train the major lifts, work on gymnastics skills, run hard, and jump on the rower, air dyne for time. The workouts are varied and intense, and you do a great job of avoiding routine, if you follow the programming and avoid biasing. BUT how well do you meet the other important pieces of world-class fitness?
Most importantly, are you USING your fitness by learning and playing new sports? This is where I think a lot of people miss the mark. Our lives are so busy with work, Facebook, traffic, etc. But it's so important to take time to use our fitness doing things we love or learning new activities to love! When's the last time you tried something new? How about skiing, rock climbing, traversing a new hike, or something similar? With the New Year comes a new opportunity to try new things and to use your newfound fitness!
So let's all work to think about what we are putting in our bodies, to find consistency in coming into the gym, and to going out and experiencing new activities with our fitness. After all, we've got all this fitness, why not put it to use?
When you do try something new, send us a picture! We love sharing when our members try new things, experience new activities, and use their fitness in fun new ways!
